GAUCHE. adj. de tout genre. Qui est opposé au droit, & se dit dans l'homme du costé où la rate est située, qui est reputé le moins noble, & qui est ordinairement le plus foible. Le costé gauche. la main gauche. le pied gauche. l'oeil gauche. l'aile gauche d'un bastiment. l'aile gauche d'une armée.
On le dit fig. de ce qui est mal fait & mal tourné. Cet homme a l'esprit gauche. ce garçon est grand, mais il est mal basti, il est gauche. cet escalier est mal pris, il est gauche.
On dit aussi absolument, La gauche, pour dire, La main gauche, le costé gauché. Il faut prendre sur la gauche. le Parlement tient la droite, & la Chambre des Comptes tient la gauche dans les marches, dans les ceremonies. il prit la droite & il luy laissa la gauche. que vostre gauche ne sçache point ce que fait vostre droite.
A Gauche. adv. Du costé gauche. Ce soldat frappoit à droit & à gauche. faire demi tour à gauche. quand vous serez en tel endroit, prenez à gauche.
On dit fig. Prendre une chose à gauche, pour dire, La prendre de travers, la prendre autrement qu'il ne faut.
